Save Five Ways Campaign: Ian took the lead to help a series of small businesses, venues and community venues to protect themselves when developers landed them with imminent eviction from their premises. Ian launched the campaign and provided it with a clear sense of purpose and much of the publicity work it required. The campaign included:

  • A campaign name and logo.
  • An information leaflet with petition attached, which was widely distributed in the area, resulting in hundreds of signatures of support.
  • Press releases which resulted in appearances in Channel 5 News, BBC WM, Birmingham Post, Birmingham Mail, and Birmingham News.
  • A 500 word article and sub-feature by Ian for WhatsOnUK's major publication, exploring the ways that diversity is being squeezed out of our city centres by redevelopment and rising land values.
  • Proposals to set aside and refurbish an area of Birmingham City Centre to accomodate and promote independent businesses, venues and community interests.
  • Weekly meetings with all affected parties.
  • Meetings with the developers' representatives.

The campaign succeeded in raising awareness of the plight of independent businesses and venues and community projects in our city centres. With the support of leading local politicians including Clare Short, the companies affected secured an extension to their tenancies to help them survive.

Ian wrote and produced the successful Lenton Boulevard entry to the 2003 Radio 1 Student Radio Awards, which resulted in the series winning 'Best Entertainment Show' - click here to download the sampler compilation (MP3, 9MB) and press release (Word, 20KB). The bid was greatly enhanced by the involvement of BBC Radio Nottingham - prior publicity work resulted in a live interview with Ian and the series Executive Producer in the popular Karl Cooper Breakfast Show, an online feature, and the entire series becoming promoted and hosted by the BBC online (above left).

Publicising the show's award-winning success earned significant industry praise and media exposure. The series was given a major colour third-page feature in The Nottingham Evening Post (below left), and earned interest and praise from industry professionals including The Archers Editor Vanessa Whitburn.

Ian was Press Officer for New Matrix Productions' award-winning adaptation of Dario Fo's Mistero Buffo at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Paradise Green Promotions' Best Show and Best Director awards), with his press release and media liaising securing a favourable review in Three Weeks. He was also Press Officer for Can't Pay? Won't Pay! in 2006, for which he was interviewed live on BBC Asian Network by Nikki Bedi.

Ian's press releases and promotional website for his 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival play Haze secured the show pleasing reviews in The Scotsman (11/8/03) and Fest (12/8/03), as well as a topical appearance on comedy forum Chortle and an extended feature in the The Nottingham Evening Post (14/3/03) introducing its Nottingham run. Ian also produced further publicity materials including programmes and co-produced the show's posters and flyers.
